Mapping the colloquial terms for soft drinks across the United Sates

Aug 19, 2024

Let’s talk turkey. Soda, pop, coke, fizz, carbonated beverage, and any number of other colloquial terms for soft drinks have regional sway over how we talk about them. Soft drink terminology across the United States varies wildly and is vehemently defended by regional groups, most of which are clearly saying it wrong.

What is a soft drink and why is it called that?
Soft drinks (whatever you call them locally) are called "soft" to differentiate from "hard" alcoholic drinks.

What are all the "other" terms people have input for what they claim to call carbonated soft drinks in their area? Fizzy drinks, fizzy juice, tonic, mineral, cool drink, sody or sodie, soda-pop (because why not combine the two), lots of other branded soda names like Faygo, and then thousands of entries of standard internet trolling that they should probably delete. You can also tell which people eat far too much fast food by calling it a drink or even a cup size like "large drink" because they fill it with their choice of flavor at the fountain.
